India: what to do in December

Month by month, Monica Bathija brings you her tips on what to do now in the container garden in India – based on her experiences on her roof terrace container garden in Mumbai.

This month Monica says:

“I’ve been on a clean-up spree in the garden, repotting nearly everything and emptying out all the veggies that have lived out their lives. Have started on a clean slate end-November and December and after the chaos of the monsoon it feels good to have everything organised and in order again. Also my first attempt at growing potatoes!”
Here’s the to-do list for December.
1. It’s time for new beginnings and salad greens. I’ve sowed lettuce and mixed salads as well as fenugreek.
.
New beginnings: fenugreek seedlings

2. Feed the tomatoes, capsicums and other growing veggies. Repot seedlings sown in November to ideal sized pots.
3. It’s a good time to sow pumpkin, watermelon, muskmelon, gourds, chillies, cabbage, cucumber, brinjal, carrots, radishes, mustard, cauliflower.
.
A couple of new tomato seedlings, one of them cherry tomatoes. An aubergine fruit and an aubergine seedling. On the left is ginger.

I have also sowed some peas and radishes. And in the blue bucket, just sprouting leaves… are the potatoes!

4. It’s cooler now so avoid overwatering the plants but ensure you keep the potato soil moist. Add a couple of inches of compost and soil mix into the potatoes container once they are six inches tall.
5. Watch out for aphids and mealy bug.
